Sorry, this reply went way off on a tangent, lol. Since it seems like some kind of strange bug, I'd want to check out all the files and my mods to see if there is some conflict or broken game file somewhere causing this as I wouldent want to get 10 more hours into the game and have something else wonky happen that I had to figure out how to get around. I kind of compare it to switching from regular unleaded gas, to premium unleaded because you notice your gas mileage going down alot, it may help with the problem, but ultimately your going to want to know what caused the problem to start with, or at least do everything you can do to remove the problem so you don't have to rely on the console to fix things for you later down the road if whatever caused this, causes something else wonky to happen, and possibly something that can't be fixed by console commands. The reason I don't recommend using the console unless you absolutely have to is that it's only going to take care of that one thing. So I will check all 3 and see if they glow before I get to them and let you know what I find out sometime tomorrow. I am assuming from your OP that you can't open any of the 3 chests at all, and that they don't even glow in Witcher vision.

Unfortunately I have managed to get to the point where I can do this, but I forgot one of the chests is guarded by a fairly high level Wyvern, so I'm trying to level fast to be able to take it out so I can check all 3 chests and see if I run into the same problem you are having. I HAD planned on playing back thru from before I even got to Midcopse, to see if I can open all the Griffin school chests before I even get the treasure maps so I can at least confirm weather for that specific set, there IS some weird reason they made it so you couldent open them before some arbitrary point, or it may just be some kind of weird game or mod bug your running into. It indeed sounds like a really strange bug, but I can't confirm it's a bug yet.

Before doing that though, I would recommend removing all mods you have installed, if any, and having Steam do a scan of the game files to see if any have been changed or have somehow gotten corrupted, if you got the game on Steam.
